My due date was January 19, but since Mike started school we wanted to do an induction so he could let his teachers know ahead of time that his wife was going to have a baby and he'd need to miss class. So I scheduled Tucker to be born on the 13th.
I anxiously called Labor and Delivery at 5:30 am and they told me to come in at 6:30. So I struggled to get out of bed with my big belly to shower. I quickly got ready and kissed my boys good-bye. Landon was going to be watched by a good friend all day and Mike was going to go to his morning classes and then meet me at the hospital afterwards before the baby.
It was weird checking into the hospital without Mike, and all the nurses kept asking me where my husband was. I kept reassuring them that he was coming after classes. I got into my hospital gown and was walking around the delivery room because I didn't want to get into bed just yet; I knew I'd be in it all day. I saw the warmer where they'd clean up the baby in, his swaddling blanket, hat, and teeny diaper. I'm not going to lie, I was really nervous! I knew just what was going to happen, and what pain I would possibly feel. When I had Landon I had an idea what was going to happen, but I didn't know what to expect.
The nurse finally came in and hooked me up to the IV. Later she came in and put my on the antibiotics for Group B Strep. The doctor came in around 8 and checked my cervix. I was 3 cm dilated, but the baby was at a +3, so he told me he'd be back around noon to check me again. The nurse started me on a low dose of pitocin and let me be. She suggested I take a little nap, but couldn't so I watched a lot of tv. I was getting some contractions, but I was barely feeling them. I asked the nurse when I could get my epidural, and she said the doctor wanted to wait until I was at least 4 cm, and the baby dropped a little lower. Okay.
By 10:30, they were a little stronger, and the nurse kept upping my dose of pitocin. Since I hadn't eaten anything since 6:15 that morning, I was starting to get shaky and really hungry. I asked the nurse if there was anything I was able to eat and she brought me some 7-up and two containers of jell-o. That helped a lot, and the jell-o tasted so good! I guess it's been a long time since I've had jell-o.
Mike came in at 11:45. I was so happy to see him! He sat down and ate his lunch he'd picked up on the way, and I caught him up on what's going on. He actually had forgotten to bring the camera, so he headed back home again. Luckily the doctor was late at getting to me. He didn't make it until 2:00. I was expecting to have had the baby at this time, so I was a little irritated that he was so late to come in. When he did come, I hadn't progressed so he broke my water. He told me that my contractions are going to get a lot worse now that the cushion of the water was gone. He also told me that the baby had passed some meconium so they're not going to stimulate the baby until they can get it all out of his lungs. This same thing happened to Landon, so I was okay. I was a little disappointed that I wouldn't be holding him right after he was born, but I knew he would be in good hands. I again asked about the epidural and the nurse told me to call her when I can no longer handle the pain and she'd page the anesthesiologist. Within a half an hour my contractions got a lot worse.
I called the nurse after about an hour to get checked, and she said I was a 4, but still a +3. At 4:00 I called her again and she said I was at a 5, and she'd order the epidural. My contractions were coming about every minute and getting severely painful. I kept telling Mike I didn't want to do a natural delivery!! I told him again and again to not let me go natural. Poor guy, there was nothing he could do. Around 5, I called the nurse again to check me because I felt like the baby was super low and I needed my epidural NOW! She said the anesthesiologist had to go into an emergency c-section and he'll get to me as soon as he was done.
I was having a really hard time getting through the contractions. Mike was a very good coach. He let me squeeze his hand as I breathed through each one. He would breathe with me and help me go in through my nose and out through my mouth. At one point I remember my left arm and face getting tingly, and the nurse said I was hyperventilating, and that I needed to focus on my breathing more. It was so hard!
I called the nurse in at 5:20 ish and told her I needed to push! She said the doctor is on his way and to keep breathing through the contractions. It wasn't until I heard her holler in the hallway "Tell the doctor to run! And I need so-and-so to come catch, and so-and-so to help" that I realized I'm going to deliver this baby naturally!
I breathed through one more contraction, then the doctor came in, got his gown on, and told me the next contraction I get to push. Well it came quickly, and screaming very loudly I got the baby out in 2 pushes, one for his head and one for his shoulders. Mike said "he's here, honey! He's here! You did it!" It was such a shock to my body what just happened, I couldn't seem to open my eyes. I finally did and told Mike to go start taking pictures. The doctor and nurse told me how good I did. I was really impressed with myself too! I didn't plan on delivering natural, but I did it!
They didn't want the baby to cry until his lungs and stomach were clear, so it was a few minutes. When he did it was just for a second, then he was content. They placed him in my arms and I melted. He was just so cute! During labor I decided I wanted to name him Jackson, but one I looked at him, I knew he was Tucker. He was 7lbs 13oz, 21 inches long. About a pound and a half heavier than his big brother and an inch longer. And he was a week early! Mike is happy to have a chubby snuggly baby, and I'm happy he's here and is healthy. Landon is so sweet to his little brother and always wants to "hold it". We adore our new addition!
